Capitals Beat Maple Leafs 5-4, Tie Arrangement At 2 Recreations Each

Washington coach Barry Trotz tried Tom Wilson on his third line, and it paid off in a big way. Wilson scored twice and saved a goal from his own net, and the Capitals beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Wednesday night to tie their first-round playoff series at two games apiece.

T.J. Oshie also had two goals and Alex Ovechkin scored his third goal of the playoffs as the top-seeded Capitals regained momentum with the series shifting back to Washington for Game 5 on Friday night. Wilson also scored the overtime winner in Game 1. The Toronto native had seven goals in 82 games this season. Wilson's play has earned the confidence of Trotz, who put the winger on Washington's third line alongside Andre Burakovsky and Lars Eller.

"I thought all our guys stepped up tonight," Wilson said. Zach Hyman, James van Riemsdyk, Auston Matthews and Tyler Bozak scored for Toronto, which was coming off a 4-3 overtime win on Monday night. Frederik Andersen stopped 22 shots. Matthews scored his second of the series at 12 minutes, but Oshie restored Washington's two-goal lead 59 seconds later. All rights reserved.

The Tops And Wizards Convey A Twofold Dosage Of Edgy Dramatization

  1. The Capitals — clinging to a terrifying two-goal lead — were forced to kill nearly two minutes of a two-man Toronto Maple Leafs advantage on fresh ice.
  2. The Wizards saw the third quarter come to a close, still down four points, and with just about all their best frontcourt players having been awarded personal fouls by the dozen, with little parachutes carrying additional personal fouls drifting down from the rafters.
  3. The Maple Leafs scored to draw within a single goal, having turned a simmering three-goal broth into a raging Red Bull boil.

And so, at various points between 9:00 and 9:30, Wizards fans felt like this. While Caps fans felt like this. Then T.J. Oshie scored an insurance goal, John Wall and Bradley Beal activated their powers of invincibility, both teams hung on through a final few heart murmurs, and everyone was a winner.

The Caps evened their series at 2-2 and are headed back to Verizon Center with home-ice intact.


  

Wizards Go Up 2-0 On Birds Of Prey In NBA Playoff Arrangement Defaced By Enthusiastic Refereeing

When Paul Millsap said after Game 1 that the Wizards were playing MMA, not basketball, he mostly inspired jokes. The Wizards hung onto the win, despite a combined 53 fouls and 71 free throws, both up from an already foul-prone Game 1. Bradley Beal provided 31 points on 27 shots, while Brandon Jennings had a key spurt off the bench, finishing with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Paul Millsap led the way for Atlanta, and his 27 points came in part due to his 14-of-15 shooting from the free throw line. But it wasn’t just shooting fouls that clogged this game up — it was common ones that prevented the game from ever generating a decent pace or rhythm. The Wizards are fourth in fouls committed per game this season, while Atlanta has drawn the third-most in the league. Wall’s 12-of-15 free throw shooting, for one, can speak at that.

Wizards fans are certainly with me, chanting “refs you suck” throughout the game and sarcastically applauding an obvious correct call like this one late in the game.


  

Rockets Seize Amusement 2 with Rally Over Thunder

The Rockets took the best shot the Thunder could land. The win gave the Rockets a 2-0 series lead heading to Game 3 Friday in Oklahoma City. The Rockets were barely hanging on when Westbrook left the floor with 2:21 left in the third quarter. Oklahoma City led by 14 with Westbrook scoring 14 third-quarter points to give him 36 in 29 minutes. But as soon as he sat, the Rockets hit back.

Harden began and ended the run with 3-pointers as the Rockets finished the quarter with a 12-3 burst to rush to within three points. By then, however, Westbrook was missing and the Rockets had found their offense. Beverley, who had 15 points, making 6 of 9 shots, drained a corner 3, sending the game to the final two minutes with the Rockets holding a five-point lead and soaring.


The Thunder beat the Rockets on the boards, scoring 12 second-chance points in the first half after getting just four in Game 1. They ran the Rockets off the 3-point line and took off after turnovers or missed 3s. 

  

Rockets Conquer Westbrook's 51, Take 2-0 Lead Over Thunder

James Harden scored 35 points and the Houston Rockets overcame 51 points from Russell Westbrook in the highest-scoring triple-double in playoff history, beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 115-111 on Wednesday night to take a 2-0 lead in the first-round Western Conference playoff series.

Westbrook set a franchise playoff scoring record and added 13 assists and 10 rebounds. Game 3 is Friday night in Oklahoma City.

The game was tied before Houston scored 10 straight points with 3-pointers from Harden, Patrick Beverley and Eric Gordon to make it 114-104 with 1:22 remaining. Westbrook had four straight points to start a 7-1 run after that, but the Thunder wouldn't get any closer.

TIP-INS

Thunder: Westbrook was just two rebounds shy of a triple-double by halftime with 22 points and 10 assists. Roberson was Oklahoma City's second-leading scorer with 12 points. Oklahoma City made just 7 of 30 3-pointers.

Rockets: Houston has won five in a row over Oklahoma City including regular-season games. 

  

Russell Westbrook's Fizzled Fourth Quarter Takeover Was The Thunder's Own Choice

While James Solidify believed his colleagues to score down the extend, Russell Westbrook did not. Since Westbrook shot 4-of-18 in the final quarter, the misfortune will be faulted for him. At the point when Westbrook went to the seat up 86-74 with two minutes left in the second from last quarter, the Rockets promptly shut the quarter on a 12-3 run.
